AND the answer to IS......

I sent those pictures over to our resident cougar expert here, who also spent 3 years studying bear. He felt very strongly that it was a black bear that had left this delightful pile near the end of the driveway. He said what I thought was hair was most likely digested grasses. Additionally he said the shape is pretty unusual for this time of year, but that shape is common in the fall & early spring for bear. Oh the things you learn about poo!

It makes sense because a couple of weeks ago our neighbor had a bear in her yardwaste bin at about 5:30am. Maybe the bear has decided that our street is the perfect "home".

He said the vultures love the thermals this time of year and often follow them up the sides of mountains, which could have explained their behavior going up and down near the hill. If it WAS a kill- it would have to be pretty old before the vultures would start in.

I'm getting an education living in National Geographic country!
