It's the season for being extra active and the season for body tweaks. Yesterday I did a doozie to my right ankle. It was one of our 80 degree beautiful summer days and I headed over to the ledge to get in my afternoon workout. Since the parking area was so crowded, I parked at connector trail that is infrequently used. I headed up the connector trail and soon caught up with the main ledge trail. It was a gorgeous, bug-free day! Vitamin D at the top was plentiful and if it weren't for the pesky ants, I may have even grabbed a nap.
With my spirits and energy high, I buzzed back down the ledge in my typical jog. I connected with my little connector trail and continued to jog through beautiful green forest. Suddenly from out of NOWHERE, comes a large buck (that's a male deer for all you city-folk) who crosses the trail within a couple yards of me. I literally almost 'ran' into the thing. It scared the livin' tweedle out me and I'm sure I did the same to it. You can see where this is going. My momentum is up...I'm running downhill at a good clip, deer crosses...I take my eyes off the trail...then BOOM- come down wrong on my ankle after hitting a rock. The ankle rolls inward, I stumble, but the adrenaline is so strong that I continue running a few steps before the pain kicks in and I almost hop all the way back to the car.
Today was a dr. visit complete with a fashionable walking cast. X-ray results out tomorrow will let me know if I broke sumthin' but I'm thinking it's just sprain. It's bad timing with Alaska on the horizon, but when life give you big bucks...make...um..venison? OK...that was just plain distasteful.
"You sure got a good 'bang' for your buck, " my sister said this afternoon. Good one...really, really good one and a perfectly laughable quote for just such an occasion.
